Too young to know?

So, opinion time.

My mom works a couple of hours at a daycare. There is a child named Robert who has a developmental delay. He is four, his comprehension skills are good, however he receives speech therapy twice a week. The kids all see him out the window and let him know his ride has arrived and/or 'Robert's back!'.

The children have to know that he needs more attention when it comes to learning. Being in a classroom environment of any kind, you get used to the kids around you.

Recently, a parent brought it to the teachers attention that her son, who is four, told her "Robert rides the short bus."

This started a long discussion of whether or not he was meaning it derogatory and/or he was stating what he saw and didn't realize.

I do not know.

I remember one time at my biggest when Christopher (who was around four at the time) asked me why I was so big. Being that young, I am unsure if they are just curious why someone is different or just saying what they see.

So, what do you think? Chime in. I'm curious.
